Use my Netgear device as a router with a Bell modem

I have an Orbi RBR850 router and 2 satellites.

My Orbi routes is connected in AP mode to the Bell modem SagemCom Gigabub fiber (one of the modem switch ports goes to the Netgear internet port)

My network is 192.168.2.0/24

Because of that configuration, I cannot use Access control.

Therfore, I would like to use the router in router mode and the bell modem only to get the internet.

I have tried to switch to router mode but then I lose all internet connection and I had to connect my phone to the IP address of the netgear router directly(got a 192.168.1.0/24 IP address from DHCP) to switch it back to AP mode.

I would like to know how I have to connect both devices together to get it work the way I wish.

Thank you

  • Yes you can...If your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

    Couple of options,
    1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
    2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
    3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router.

    Try option #2 first...

      Regarding option 2:
      1. Do I leave the ethernet connection as it is?
      2. Do I disable the modem DHCP?
      3. if I disable the modem DHCP, then after switching the netgear to router mode, it will get the 192.168.1.1 default address.
Is it that addresses I have to put in the modem DMZ?

        Yes.

You'll need to consult with the ISP or the modem's manufacturer on how to properly bridge the modem, if it supports that feature.
        3. if I disable the modem DHCP, then after switching the netgear to router mode, it will get the 192.168.1.1 default address.
Modem needs to be put in to Bridge mode or the DHCP service needs to be kept enabled. You can set the RBR for a different IP address of 192.168.0.1 and this will avoid what the modem maybe using that could be 192.168.1.1.

Is it that addresses I have to put in the modem DMZ?
No, the IP address the RBR gets on it's WAN port or internet services would need to be put in to the modems DMZ. Look on the RBRs web page under Advanced Tab/Internet section on the right to see what IP address the RBR gets from the ISP modem.
