WAN IP address changed by ISP

Issue: Every time my network drops, the power goes out, or there is any hiccup in the signal, my modem has to be re-provisioned from the Spectrum side to reconnect, AND I have to reset the Orbi to factory setting and do a whole new reset.

Equipment

  1. Spectrum cable internet
  2. Orbi RBR750
  3. Surfboard SB8200

Background

  • I used this same hardware on Xfinity in the last place I lived, w/ NO ISSUES
  • Spectrum has been out many times, they are finally sending a lead technician
  • Every time I speak with them they give me a different story

Troubleshooting beyond all the usual steps

  • I have tested the Orbi router in a friend's network, different ISP, where we tested the router, NO ISSUES
  • Tried swapping out a modem at my home with Spectrum, SAME ISSUE with the router
  • I had been using the Spectrum provided modem when I first moved here and had lots of issues which is why I switched to my surfboard.
  • Unfortunately Spectrum is the only provider here who has speeds over 50mps in my area and I work from home.
  • The Modem is NOT a dual modem/router
  • All firmware is up to date
  • All settings in modem and router are set to Spectrum's suggested settings

HALP 😖

  • If that's happening with the ISP modem, then you and your ISP need review what's going on with the ISP modem. They need to check into why that modem is failing in power cycles, bumps or brown outs.

The Orbi system should not be factory reset during these issues as well. Only a power cycle of the ISP modem and Orbi RBR OFF for 1 minute then back ON should be first line of troubleshooting steps to get the system back online. If the RBR is not servicing internet, means there is a problem between the RBR and the ISP modem.

Get with the ISP, ask for a on site service tech and show them what your dealing with.

Try a different modem as well.

Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended.

This is not acceptable.  I have Spectrum.  When Edison favors us with a power outage, Spectrum service resumes immediately when power is restored.  It is correct that Spectrum provides residential customers with a Dynamic IP address, but Spectrum changes the IP address very seldom (months and months between changes).  Anyway, a change in IP address does not affect service unless the router is forwarding ports or using OpenVPN.  In that case, the protocol is to enroll in a DDNS service so that the router will automatically update the IP address associated with the customer URLs.
