Orbi 970 main router speed

I have the black edition of the Orbi 970 series with 2 satellites.  When I am in the room with a satellite my wifi speed is 500 to 700, but when I am in the room with the main router, my wifi speed is 300m approx.  Why am I not getting the fatser speed from my router?  All the firmware's are up to date.

  • Be sure when your in the room with the RBR that your device IS connected to the RBR and not still connected to the remote RBS. Some devices won't detach and move to the closer signal. You need to disable the wifi on the device for 5-10 seconds then re-enable it to get it to connect to the closer signal.

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router 📡 and satellite(s)🛰️? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR 📡 and RBS 🛰️ to begin with depending upon building materials when wired or wirelessly connected.

    Hello Saif75,

    Welcome to the NETGEAR Community!

I understand that you are experiencing less than stellar network speeds when you change locations from your satellite to your router.

To resolve this issue, please disconnect from your network when you are in the room with your router wait 10 seconds then reconnect to your network.

Please keep us updated to the progress of this issue!

    Best,

  • Usually just means your device isn't roaming to closer devices. Which isn't a big deal as each device has their own roaming protocol built in and if you're still getting a good connection, no need to roam and create drops/issues while roaming.

Most devices won't notice a difference faster than 50mpbs unless downloading massive files because even 4k only takes 25-50mbps.

It is often helpful to validate assumptions. Speed definitely is affected by distance from the WiFi access point and building construction in the path.  There can be multiple explanations depending on exactly what is going on.

    • If the WiFi device remains connected to the satellite rather than switching to the router, then the speed drop is understandable and the question to solve is, "why did the device not switch?"
    • If the WiFi device has actually switched from satellite to the router, that leads to a totally different question to solve.

Bearing in mind that the Orbi Attached Devices (or Device Manager) display does not update instantly.  (Something I find annoying) It would be helpful to know which condition can be verified.  Did it switch?  Or, did it not switch?
