Router upgrade to Wifi7

Thinking of upgrading my 850 series wifi6 mesh system to the new 970 series wifi7 mesh system. I have lots of IoT devices (currently on my home network) that I am not looking forward to having to reconfigure to connect to a new network. One thing I was thinking of is plugging my new router into my modem, choosing a different private network IP range, and connecting my old router to the new one so that I could leisurely migrate to the new. Does this sound like it would work, or any other ideas\advice to make the transition to a new router easier?

  • You can set up the new router using same SSID name and password before putting it online. Then what I do is to power ON the incoming RBR, reboot the ISP Modem or ONT, disconnect the out going RBR, leaving it ON, connect up the new RBR to the ISP modem/ONT and let those come to ready, then about 3-5 minutes later, turn OFF the out going RBR and your devices will auto connect and migrate to the new RBR.

  • The 850 is a pretty rock solid series. What benefit do you anticipate getting going to the 970 series (other than 6ghz)?

Just curious as that's a significant expense for not a whole lot of performance improvement.

    • True… Other than a couple issues not related to hardware I have loved my 850’s. I guess it’s just my desire to have the latest technology. I’ll probably wait for them to offer a decent discount before pulling the trigger.

Or even check into the 770 series. Its triband and if you can hardwire them in, you'll get the same benefits. I've used both 970 and 770 and with the 770 series hardwired with a 2gig connection, I can max out the 2 gig without issues.
