slow download speeds on LAN ports ORBI 971

I've was using my ORBI 971 with 2 x 970 satellites for some time with my old provider (BT). My old setup was BT homehub 2 with 900Mbps download and 115Mbupload  with Netgear Orbi setup in Bridge mode. Speeds were great getting the full speeds when a device was physically cabled into the ORBI 971.

I now have a new 2000Mbps download and 2000Mbps upload FTTP provider. With my new provider I am now using my ORBI 971 in AP mode (as I wish this to be the router) and directly connect the 10Gbps Ethernet port to my FTTP providers ONT.

Speeds using wireless are excellent and I'm getting near enough the maximum speeds available the line can sustain.

However, when plugging any device into any of the RJ45 Ethernet ports i'm getting download speeds of between 350Mbps to 500Mbps using any speedtest server I can find (speedtest.net, fast.com). Upload speeds though are at 1.9Gbps so perfect.

Below is the status of the WAN and LAN port.

firmware is the latest V9.12.3.3_1.2.20

I can only get faster download speeds using the Speedtest.net application using Exa Networks speedtest server which is really odd (they are not my ISP).

So to be clear

Wireless speeds can utilize the full 2Gbps speed download and upload

Directly connected wired speeds are between 350Mbps to 500Mbps download and 2Gbps upload except when I use Exa Networks server on speedtest.net (i use the app too) when in AP mode

Download speeds were faster when the Orbi 971 was used in bridge mode using my old ISPs router too.

I think it may be some kind of bug in the firmware i'm using (perhaps MTU related)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

  • FYI, Orbi doesn't have a bridge mode. Only Router and AP modes.

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.

Does the ONT have a built in router? If not, then you'll need to configure the RBR for router mode, not AP mode.

What is the brand and model# of the ethernet adapter thats plugged in to LAN2 port?

Does this happen with any ethernet devices or PCs that support 2.5Gb LAN connection rates?

Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the device and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.

Yes sorry i meant router is now in router mode, it was previously in AP mode.

The ONT is irrelevant as wireless speeds are fine via the Orbi 971. It is some form of Adtran. It connects at 10000 as per the the screenshot.

The ONT does not have a built in router, its just an ONT with a 10Gbps RJ45 port that the ORBI plugs into with a CAT 6 cable connecting them together.

This happens with any device i connect via a LAN cable, whether connecting at 2.5Gbps or 1Gbps (for obvious reasons the upload speed maxes out at 1Gbps when using a 1Gbps capable device but the download speeds have the same issue)

The cable is CAT 6 connecting the ONT to the 10Gbps port on the ORBI. This is not an issue though as I've had speeds of 2Gbps going from the orbi via wireless which then uses this cable as the uplink to the ISPs ONT.

So sounds like if the RBR worked with your ISP older system and its not working with the newer ONT. Possible this new ONT maybe causing problems with the RBR.

What is the model# of the new Adtran ONT?

Are the cables CAT6 UTP or CAT6A STP?

  • So for your new fiber ISP, you have connected the ISP ONT port from their Gateway (?) to the RBE971 10Gb Ethernet port?

Does your ISP’s Gateway have other ports available? If so, how are they labeled? Does your ISP’s Gateway unit contain their ONT, modem, and router? Do you have access to a Gateway Web GUI through an IP (e.g. 192.168.1.254?)? If you have your RBE 971 configured for AP, where is the ISP router, inside the Gateway unit?

I have an ATT 5Gb Fiber Gateway unit that contains the fiber ONT, modem, and router. My ATT incoming fiber cable plugs into an SFP module inserted into the Gateway’s “SFP” port. My ATT Gateway also has an “ONT” port, which has a plastic cap covering that port preventing its use. My RBE971 uses it’s 10 Gb “Internet” port connected with a Cat 7 cable to the Gateway’s “5GB Ethernet port” (5Gb is the fastest residential fiber service ATT currently offers.

I’ve configured my ATT Gateway internal router to Pass-Through using their Web GUI and I manually populated my RBE 971 MAC address in a field (I don’t remember the field name, but I think it’s located on the Pass-Through tab of the Web GUI to let the Gateway router know where I’m passing-through to. ATT doesn’t offer a Bridge option), I also disabled all the firewall settings and turned off the ATT Gateway’s internal router WIFI bands to prevent congestion.

If you want the RBE971 to function as your Router, you’ll have to use Bridge or Passthrough mode to get “around” the ISP’s internal Router to avoid double Nat’s, Buebonic Plague, and a host of other nasty issues.

Sorry if I missed your description of your networks connection to the ISP internet’s in an earlier post.

There are many knowledgeable (not me) members of this NG Community that can help you (as they did me) configure your RBE so you can use it as your Router.

Also, are you using wired or the Orbi wireless backhaul?

What many of us on this Community have painfully realized already, 6Ghz does not play nice with walls. I think we’ve all been surprised at how short 6Ghz coverage distances are. Since the FCC has not finished clearing that bandwidth of the all the non-WiFi users assigned that frequency years ago, it may be that NG has our RBE 6Ghz band power reduced. If so, once the FCC increases the allowable power strength for that band, I feel certain NG will release a software update that hopefully increases our 6Ghz coverage distances.

      Hello,

      thanks for everyone's replies.

The ISPs ONT has a single 10Gbps copper port which connects to the 10Gbps Internet port on the RBE971. There is no ISP router in between the ONT and the RBE971. I do not have access to the ISPs ONT. The RBE is setup as the Internet router with IP address and gateway setup on it and that part works fine.

I'm using the RBE971 as a wireless back haul to the satellites but this isn't the issue here.

The issue i have is with directly connected wired devices to the LAN ports of the RBE971, wireless speeds are absolutely fine.

      Thanks

      Dave

Your best option will be to make contact with NG support.
