Bridged 802.11ax wifi routers - too slow!

Hi there,

I have two Netgear Nighthawk wifi 6 capable routers. My RAX40 is connected to a 600 Mbps cable modem. Speedtest at the modem indicates the full 600 Mbps as expected.

As I don't have any 802.11ax client adapters, I first tried connecting my 802.11ac clients (Macbook Pro, iMac Pro) directly to the 5Ghz network and get about 300 Mbps on speedtest (with client machines seated right next to the the router for simplicity).

To try to improve upon this, I purchased a RAX80, which is capable of running in bridge mode. I bridged it to the RAX40 on the 5Ghz network, where both were set to 2400Mbps, and have connected a client to an ethernet port on the RAX80 (gig-E interface, cat6 cabling).

Unfortunatley, I still am only getting abouty 300Mbps on the client! (Speedtest.net) Am I missing something? I thought this configuration would support real bandwidth far in excess of the 600 Mbps my cable modem service provides.

Thanks for any insights you may have.

  • What firmware is on the RAX40?

do you have access control/traffic monitoring/qos? if so, try factory resetting the rax40 and reinstalling with just setting up the minimum service (internet connection and wifi ssid/password). Then try testing again.

Testing in the same room, most of my ac devices can get faster than 300mbps out of an AC connection. My intel 9260 can hit 600-700mbps and my intel AX200 can hit >1gig over wireless if my connection is good enough.

so focus first on getting the RAX up to speed prior to bridging.
