Netgear RAX20 unable to be reset

I have a Netgear RAX20 router that I am trying to configure.

I did the reset to factory defaults sequence. Push reset button for 7 seconds. Let it reboot. Power cycle and try to connect to 192.168.1.1.

I get a logon screen and enter lowercase admin. and click Sign In.

Nothing happens.

I can click sign in with no username or password and it eventually provides a router password reset screen.

I enter the router serial number.

Then I get the first employer and city of mother's birth questions.

Blank and enter gives

The information you entered does not match what is saved on the router. Please enter it again.

I even pressed reset for 1 minute and power cycled the router to no effect.

This is ridiculous.

  • Try pressing the reset button for 10-15 seconds.

If it resets like it should it should come pop a log in screen, there should be a new set up screen with the Nighthawk app on a mobile device appearing on the web browser. Try a different web browser as well. Be sure to clear out ALL browser caches before going to the routers web page.

You have hit the brick wall known as Password Recovery.

There is a bug in Netgear's implementation of password recovery on some devices. You can get locked into a closed loop.

If password recovery is enabled, but you have not set the answers to the questions, it keeps sending you back to the beginning of the process. If you haven't already given the thing your personal answers, they are not in its memory and it has no way of knowing if they are correct.

The usual advice in these circumstances is that you need to reset the router. But you have "been there, done that" already.

The symptoms you see are something else. If you have already reset the router, "password recovery" is a distraction and a sign that something else is going on.

I went through and did the 30-30-30 reset which made it start behaving in a different manner which is a change.

The system that I am using to configure this has no internet access and is using IP address 192.168.1.200/24. I even went so far as to assign the default gateway and DNS both to 192.168.1.1.

Going to http://192.168.1.1 tries to go to http://routerlogin.net/genie_index.htm.

I need to get control of it so that I can give it a specific IP address and configure it as a wireless access point meeting specific security measures that our corporate infosec group has in place.

Right now, it is kind of accessible but unusable.

When it redirects you to routerlogin.net, just input 192.168.1.1 again. Also after you factory reset the router, disconnect the router from the ISP modem/ONT. Helps prevent it from loading the external site.

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
