Access to USB Readyshare from the internet

I have a Netgear router model C3000-100NAS. Firmware is V2.02.08 as out of the box, no hacks. It is connected to the internet through Comcast residential cable service with dynamic DNS. I signed up with NOIP.COM to work around the Comcast dynamic DNS.

A USB stick is attached as 'readyshare' storage. I can get to files on the stick from within the network under \\readyshare and http://readyshare.routerlogin.net/shares. There are no problems.

However, I can not get to anything from the internet using https://jdoe.mynetgear.com:443/shares or ftp://jdoe.mynetgear.com:21/shares as shown on the admin screen under Advanced/USB Storage/Advanced Settings (Note: jdoe replaces my real name). The message is <The connection has timed out> or similar depending on the browser. I tried IE, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, all latest versions. NOIP support confirmed that my router is there but does not respond. For weeks now I followed about any bit of information that I could find and it still does not work. Can anyone point me at a simple step-by-step document that shows how to set this up?

Also important: How do I avoid opening up everything to unauthorized visitors from the internet? Is there any way to set up a username/password challenge for request from the internet?

Thanks
