I have heard of ISPs forcing updates on people, but not Netgear. How do you know that the firmware was updated if you can't get into the router?
When you do an update yourself, either downloading the file or letting the Netgear genie do it, it may help to reset the thing back to the factory settings. (The manual will tell you how to do this.)
