Can't connect to router page after factory reset - N600 WNDR 3400v2

Hey guys,

I was recently given an N600 WNDR 3400v2 router and I'm having some trouble with it. Initially it couldn't connect to the Internet so I did a factory reset just to make sure all the settings were defaulted. Unfortunately, after the reset I am no longer able to access the router page via routerlogin.net / .com / 192.168.1.1

I can ping 192.168.1.1 but can't get to it (just get unable to connect error), tried on 3 different computers (1 Win 10 laptop and 2 Win 7 hard wired desktops).

Any ideas how I can troubleshoot and fix this? I've tried resetting to factory settings 3 times after the first time without any luck, tried with just 1 hard wire, tried with everything plugged in after a reset, nothing plugged in and then plugging in 1 machine.

Thanks!

  • So I did some more troubleshooting, when the router has booted I can access the page for abut 10-30 seconds. Just long enough to see the "Netgear genie" page where it tries to check the Internet connection:

    Netgear genie

I believe the OP is accessing the router directly via http.  It's really unfortunate that Netgear gave the router's web portal the same name as the desktop and mobile apps.  :smileyfrustrated:

Anyway, what could be happening is that after a factory reset, the router will check for the presence of an Internet connection.  If it is detects the connection and, more importantly, determines that the WAN subnet is the same as the router's LAN subnet (i.e. 192.168.1.X/255.255.255.0), then it will switch the LAN subnet to 10.x.x.x/255.0.0.0.  Unfortunately, the computer will lose its connection to the router once this switch occurs.  IIRC, the router will switch its IP address to 10.0.0.1, so you can try connecting to that address.  But, the bigger problem is that this is a sign that your ISP box is a combination modem/router.  It's generally not a good idea to run two routers in a home network.  You should either reconfigure your router as an AP or disable the router functionality in your ISP box.
