CAN'T UPGRADE?
Bought a C6900 to replace a the cheap MODEM/router that cable co provided.
I am several versions behind on firmware. Netgaer.com says that only the cable co can do upgrades, but this isn't "their" router.
How do I get my network upgraded and secured?

If you're isp won't update it, then you can't.
Sadly, only the isp can push firmware upgrades on combo devices because the firmware is tied to the provisioning.
You can have the ISP contact netgear for the latest firmware but rarely does the isp actually do so.
Its one of the primary reasons we recommend modems seperate from the routers to people.

Cable modem ISPs hold the responsibility of FW updates to modems. Some ISPs will push FW updates to user owned modems while some ISP will not. You'll need to talk to your ISP and ask for excalated support and see if they will push the FW to your system if a power off of the modem for 1 minute then back ON doesn't show any thing.
If they won't, I would recommend that you return the C series modem and get into a modem only unit. Then install a external wifi router behind the modem, Then you controll the FW updates on the wifi router. Then let the ISP deal with the modem only unit when needed.
