CAX 30 and Time Machine BAckup

I have a CAX 30 Modem/Router with a USB Drive connected formatted with MacOS Extended GUID Partition Scheme. The drive is visible when I mount it using smb://readyshare or smb://routerlogin.net, I don't see the drive in the Time Machine System Preference.

Setup takes me to the AirPort configuration utility.

The Mac is running MacOS 12.6.5 Monterey (current version).

The KB support article at https://www.netgear.com/support/product/time_machine explains the process that I followed.

The KB Article at https://kb.netgear.com/21360/How-do-I-set-up-Time-Machine-backups-to-the-USB-drive-on-my-NETGEAR-router also gives detailed instructions. The screenshots don't match the current MacOS version.

The KB article at https://kb.netgear.com/000061057/Which-older-features-are-discontinued-for-my-NETGEAR-router does not list the CAX 30 as having this feature discontinued.

The router is running firmware version V1.4.11.2 which is a downgrade based on advice from Netgear technical support due to connection issues.

Thank you in advance for any information anyone can provide about this.

  • I don't think the KB article shows the CAX30 as having it discontinued as it was never included in time machine and didn't have it. If you look at the applies to devices for using it, none of the AX routers had time machine built in.

That's why it doesn't show and why only the older devices show it as having been removed.

You posted this in the ReadyNAS forum area instead of the forum area for cable modems/gateways.  Hopefully someone will move it for you.

Thanks for the clarification. I really wish that Netgear's technical support and knowledge base was managed better.
