CM1200 modem cannot access internet

I just bought my parents a new Modem and router to replace a much older Cox Gigablast modem/router combo. I got everything home and connected and when it was all set up I attempted to connect to the internet via the wifi on my laptop, the internet would not connect. Did some troubleshooting with a Cox cable technician and after several modem resets and plugging and unplugging of coax and ether net cords I tried plugging my laptop directly into the router. I still did not get a connection to the internet even while plugged into the modem. I thought I bought a bad modem so i went to the store before it closed and swapped out for the exact same modem, connected it and had the same problem. I called cox the next day and basically was told "Not our modem, not our problem". I think the odds of getting two bad routers in a row is astronmically low so I have no idea what to do (short of just waiting till mid april to get the correct Docsis 3.1 32 channel modem/router combo).

  • The issue was resolved, turned out that the last Cox tech call I made the tech accidently mistyped a few of the numbers and letters in the MAC. After fixing the egregious mistakes, the Modem is working perfectly and the house has Wifi.

    The cm1200 isn't a router. its a modem only.

What router do you have connected to it?

Was cox able to activate it and ping it while they were setting it up?

one thing to keep in mind with the cm1200 that many people don't know. Only 1 port is usable for the average consumer.

Reason why it has extra ports is this.

    1. port aggregation. you can aggregate ports 1 & 2 so they run together. most average routers don't currently support this feature. so if you're router doesn't have wan port aggregation, its a bit pointless.

    2. ISP's that allow multiple public ip addresses. Most ISP's don't allow this for consumers. I know cox and comcast don't. you can pay extra for a business line and get multiple public ip address.

So its something to keep in mind that if you've got more than 1 device plugged into it, you shouldn't. follow this procedure.

power off both modem and router. Disconnection any devices from them both.

connect the coax to the modem. power it on. give it 3-5 minutes to fully boot.

connect 1 cable from port 1 of the cm1200 to your router's wan port.

then power up the router. give it the same 3-5 minutes to fully boot.

then see if you can setup the router/use the internet.

I have it connected to a model R7000 router. Cox was able to ping it and activate while I was setting it up. I am only using one port on the modem.

What firmware is on the R7000?

Are you able to follow the same procedure and access the internet with just a computer hooked directly to the modem? disconnect the R7000 and hook a computer up to the cm1200. then follow the reboot procedure i listed prior.
