how do you know it overheats? by touching or by RED LED.
if it overheats beyond its spec, it will show RED LED and shutdown itself.
please post a picture of how you have placed it.

Hi,
I just bought NetGear CM500 modem and when I turn on and leave it on for a short time, it gets warm to the touch on both sides. At first I laid it flat. It got very hot. Then I placed it vertically. It still gets warm. Plus the metal screw where the Cable wire will go gets rather hot.
I've been reading reviews of various other modems and seems they experience the same thing.
My older modem was designed to be placed flat with all open ventilation on top. It never got warm to the touch.
1. Is the vertical design, which seems to contribute to the modem getting hot, safe to use? I don't want any fires!!
2. Is there another type of NetGear modem that is safer to use that won't get warm or hot to the touch?

#1. If it overheats, it will show up RED on the power LED the device will shutdown by itself.
#2. CM500 is safe. If you do need models with more holes, you can check CM600, CM700 or CM1000. their design is different and it has more holes.
