Factory resetting most Netgear usually involves pushing and holding the reset button for about 8 to 10 seconds until the lights flash on and off.
If this doesn't work, then just log into the router and manually change the SSID.

Your reply was sort of helpful. If I may, I'd like to offer some constructive ciritcism...
No need to repeat the procedure for factory resetting when the original post mentions that it was already attempted many times.
Your suggestion to log into the router was only partly helpful. It reminded me that if i just connect directly to the router using an ethernet cable (rather than wifi) then i could log into it with the default UN/PW. for a real novice, your answer might have been puzzling because there would be no way to log into it via wifi given the issues with security key mentioned in the original post.
but in the end, i got in thanks to your reply, so I do appreciate it :-)

I provided the tip on factory resets because the procedure you followed is different than what is documented by Netgear and doesn't always work.
