How do I hook up phone line

My ISP, Astound(RCN) said my modem is not compatible with a landlines. They suggested I rent a crappy Arris modem, which they happen to have. I like the Nighthawk modem but not many offer landline connection that's a reasonable price for a home user. It eas only for a Lifeline device. I think they have cellular models now which would have better coverage.
