n600 c3700 usb port question

i just got this modem and i see it has the usb port and the webside says i can connect a hard drive to it for storage. i use chrome books for my internet and i did connect a 500gb drive to the usb but i can't see the drive. so what might i have to do int he setup to make the drive visable to my computers? thanks
