You wanted a DSL modem, so you went out and bought a DSL
modem+router, so that you could disable its router section (that is,
most of it), and get a DSL modem? That might not have been the most
economical course.
D7000[v1] or D7000v2? Firmware version?
Did you ever try to get the D7000[vX] to work as a DSL modem+router
(without involving the XR700)? I'd start that way. Then, if the
D7000[vX] can figure out how to configure itself for your BT connection,
you might be able to glean some clues about the settings which might be
needed on the router, if the D7000[vX] were to be configured as a
modem-only. Things like PPPoE credentials, for example.
Can you get any information from BT or the "BT home Hub 5" about its
(required or actual) DSL parameters?

Have you asked BT about configuring a D7000[vX] for use with your
service? Forum search? Web search?

These gizmos both have multiple LED indicators. What do they
indicate?
Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your (actual) model
number(s), and look for Documentation. Get the User Manual(s). Read.
Look for the LED indicator descriptions.
