New house is wired throughout for internet, wont assign desktop IP add

Okay so I bought a new house and it is direct hardwired for internet, it has a switching hub in the master bedroom. I connected my netgear cm400 modem and plugged it into the switch there. The cables then go to 5 other rooms in the house. In the livingbroom i set up my netgear nighthawk router and that works just fine but when i plugged in my desktop to the internet jack in the den it said it could not be assigned an IP address. How do i fix this?

  • The CM400 is a pure cable modem.  Therefore, you need to connect all of your home devices to the router, like this:

    Internet===CM400===Router===Switch===Devices

  • Okay so i need to put my router in the downstairs living room as i have multiple devices to connect to it but i have another netgear router so would i be able to do this
    Internet= cm400= older router= switch= new router in living room?

      Yes, that will work.  It's strongly recommended that you put the new router into AP Mode.  This disables its router functionality and turns it into an Ethernet switch plus Wi-Fi Access Point.  If you don't need Wi-Fi there, then you can install another switch.  This would enable you to put the new router next to the CM400, like this:

      Internet===CM400===New Router===Switch===Switch===Wired devices

      What's the model?  The setting will usually be in the Advanced Settings.

      N750 is the speed rating, not the model number.  Your model probably beings with WNDR.  What are the final 4 digits?

      You will find AP mode under ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Wireless AP.  Follow the onscreen instructions.
