Nighthawk CAX 80 wi fi calling issues

Hello all, first post here in the community. Just purchased the mentioned router/cable modem yesterday, for a pretty penny too. I suddenly lost the ability to make wifi calls from both my personal and work phones, both Samsung and both on att network. After much searching here and the web, finding mostly 3-4 year old remarks about the same issue, and several failed attempts to call Netgear support, one successful that dropped or something where they're supposed to call back, but didn't, I found all the recommendations on the 'net to turn off SIP ALG and IPSec ALG and also to disable DoS and port scan protection in WAN setup, all of which seems to have at least for now, fixed the wifi calling. Which is important because I have little cell signal where I live and need to at least make and receive calls, especially when on call for work. My question then is, what potential dangers does all this disabling of security features portend? Some articles state the likelihood of problems is very slim, others state the opposite, naturally.

I'd like to turn each feature back on one at a time, but haven't the patience to continue troubleshooting now that calling seems to be fixed. Maybe I'll try that next weekend, sigh.

Otherwise, thus far and after some issues during setup, the router both on the LAN and wireless seems to be working fine, which it should considering the price.

Also, if anyone needs the info: Win 11 Home on a one year old Dell XPS desktop using Comcast as my ISP getting around 600 Mbps down and 24 Mbps up.

Thanks in advance.

  • Should only need to disable SIP ALG if thats whats causing the problem and not DoS and port scan feature.

Using most current released FW version?

Yes, the update firmware check shows no newer version. I'll try re-enabling the Dos and port scan feature, just not this evening; too frustrated to try and then have the wifi calling not work again. Have any ideas why SIP ALG might break the wifi calling? Especially since it seems to be a known issue for some years now, one might think someone would have fixed it.

      Thanks for the quick reply.

SIP ALG is a different developer that NG uses. I know for a fact that it works enabled with other model NG products. Possible that it hasn't been fully updated on the CAX80 yet.

Another thing to try is to disable any MAC address randomizers on the phones.
