Router blocked by Netgear Genie message requesting new password

Have older Netgear router that has worked fine.  Now blocked by a message from routerlogin.com that requests Admin Accout Settings with a password be created.  Is this a legit request from Netgear or a sham?  Can the blocking message to removed or worked around, without inputting any info?

  • I've been doing a lot of factory resets and a screen like that always shows up and also asks 2 questions.

         Is that accurate?

It's not any kind of "request from Netgear".  "routerlogin.com"
normally points to your own (modem+)router, not to some outside-world
web site (legitimate or not).  If you're in any doubt, then disconnect
the cable which connects your (modem+)router to the outside world.

Probably not.  I'd guess that the idea was to make it harder to gain
access to your device using the default password.  Do you believe that
leaving the password as "password" will make it more secure than
      selecting a different password?
