Unable to access Router control panel

I naively called tech support on Sunday and the customer "service" rep registered my Netgear cable modem but would NOT let me access the control panel until I forked over $49/3 months. I am really angry that I need to PAY to access the control panel and all because I was foolish enough to share my serial number with this guy. Is there a way to reset the password because he seems to have created my a/c but would not give me the way to access my control panel? Why does Netgear allow such a scam to happen to their customers? We paid for your product, we need to be able to solve our own problems instead of having our products registered by your "customer service" reps and then realize you now have to pay to get access to your router's control panel. Very creative scam.

    First off what NG cable modem model are you referring too? 

    Most C and CM and CAX series modems web pages can be accessed via 192.168.100.1 in any web browser and wired PC. 

     

    Next time try forum help first before calling support. Most fees are with users that products that are NOT in warranty.

      My cable modem starts with a 'C'. Should I be able to access control panel or not? Is it normal for the "customer service" rep to set up an a/c for me and then prevent my access to it? Who do I call at Netgear to report this? Is there anyone who does care or is this a Netgear scam? Going to that IP address asks me for user name and pwd. Please help!

    Who ever you have called - this was very likely not Netgear.

    The only way to access your cable modem is by using a local Web browser, from a device connected to your network. The admin password is stored locally. Factory reset -> How do I reset my NETGEAR cable modem or modem router Once the device restarted and has resynched the connection, 

    When you log in to your router again, use the default login credentials:

    User Name: admin
    Password: password
