Unable to connect to Internet

Just purchased a new cm500 modem and a nighthawk router. Walking through the steps to set up the modem and have the Ethernet cord connected to my computer and the modem powered on but all I’m getting is a flashing amber downstream light and an amber Ethernet light. Cannot get Internet on the computer that’s connected via Ethernet cord, any insights? We have Mediacom cable internet.

Ok, but "a nighthawk router" is not a very detailed description of
anything.  An actual model number would be more useful.

A cable has two ends, and some of this equipment has more than one
Ethernet port, making that description of what's connected to what less
    specific than it might be.

So, the (unspecified) "a nighthawk router" is not yet involved?

Have you talked to your ISP?  Many cable-TV ISPs need to be informed
of the MAC address of a cable modem(+router) which will be connected to
    their system.

The router is not involved yet, still in the box actually because we haven’t even been able to establish internet via Ethernet.
One end of the Ethernet cable is plugged into the sole Ethernet port on the back of the modem and the other end is plugged into our hp laptop Ethernet port.
We called our ISP and their solution was to unplug the power and plug it back in which obviously did nothing.
