Very poor, inconsistent wifi download speeds

Hello NetGear community members. I am brand new here with a speed problem from my newly purchased Router Modem. I am looking for some helpful advice and I am sure I can get it here. I am a non-tech senior citizen who is using NuLink cable service. They are providing me with a 100mbps internet signal that measures a weak 6.5 to 12.3mbps download and 1.2 to 3.4mbps upload when doing a speed test.  The 3.4mbps upload is near the 4.0mbps upload they promised. Actually, I am getting 90.4mbps from the NuLink cable going into the NetGear AC1750 Modem Router. My home is 2300 square feet with an open format. I have 5 more days before I have to return this Modem Router to Office Depot. Even on my cell phone there are only 2 bars showing which is not good. There are only two (2) computers in use at any time. We are not gammers. My computer is located on the first floor and my wife's computer and office is ocated on the second floor almost directly above where the AC1750 is located here on the first floor. It would appear the AC1750 may be defective. My computer is located about 25 feet from where the AC1750 is located here on the first floor. What can be the problem?  By the way, I have a TP-Link N600 router and TP-Link  300Mbps Universal WiFi Range Extender, TL-WA850RE.

Thanks for any help I can get.

Good Sunday Morning Mr. Darren M,

Please forgive me for not responding before now. I had been working on some things that came up, needing to be taken care of. I have printed out the link info you provided and will read when I return from church. I hope this info will guide me regarding how to change channels between 2.4 and 5Mhz. Is it possible to use a second router with the AC1750 Modem Router? In other words, I was thinking about using the WiFi signal to drive the router on the second floor where my wife's office is located. I am thinking this would help speed up my wife's computer. Right now when I do a Speed Test using SpeedTest.net I am only getting a reading of ( Ping=48ms, Download=38.97 and Upload=4.41. Presently, I am paying for speeds of  Download=100Mbps and Upload=4.00Mbps. The company offers 50Mbps speed which would cost me about $11 less. No sense spending the extra money if I can't get the maximum speed I'm paying for. I will be back in touch once I adjust the channel. Thanks again.
