What affects network thruput on a Switch?

Not being a networking expert, I am curious why I experience slower network speeds when using a Ethernet switch. Here is my example: I have my workstation plugged directly into a C3700 cable modem/Router LAN port and am getting 100MBs internet download speeds. When I plug a FS015 Fast Ethernet Switch into the same LAN port on the router, and then plug my workstation into a port on the switch, I only get 36MBs internet download speeds.

Can someone explain to me why a switch affects the download speeds? I assume my experience is typical, and not due to a problem with the switch. Thanks.

  • Your experience is atypical - as a general rule, switches no not impact download speeds.
  • Well, there aren't very many components involved in this set up. A Netgear switch and a Netgear modem. Ar you suggesting the Switch may be defective?
