WiFi C6300 Modem Router - router connecting but not the modem

Purchased a new HP laptop in January.  Trying to connect Netgear C6300 WiFi Router Modem.  Able to connect the router portion but can't get the modem to connect to Xfinity.  Xfinity tech conducted troubleshooting and determined it was the modem.  Each time I run the Xfinity app to connect to the internet, it fails.  Can't connect TV's or cells to the internet.  I have rebooted and reinstalled everything with the same result - failed internet Xfinity app connection and with live Xfinity tech support on the phone. Nighthawk shows the Netgear is connected.  How is the router connecting but not the modem?

    Do you have a screensnip of the cables connections page and event logs? 

    that'll show the modem sides connection back to the ISP. 

     

    How did the tech determine the modem was bad?
