Error message "self-assigned IP address", related to security settings?

Hi,

I have the PLW1000 which previously worked, but has stopped working. The two networks as I named them, at both frequencies, appear in the dropdown options of my Mac and both appear to have a good signal. When I try to connect from my Mac and I open "Network Preferences" I see a message that says:

"Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.128.46 and will not be able to connect to the Internet."

I know there was a similar earlier post, but the issue was never resolved and the thread was closed so I'm starting a new one.

The Wifi LED is blue, the Pick a Plug LED is intermittently green and sometimes off, and the power LED is green.

The best idea I have is the someone accidentally pressed the security button.  Would changing the security setting affect how the IP address is given out?

I also have trouble connecting to the network from multiple devices, so I know it's the network not my laptop.

Thank you!

Gabrielle

  • Works now!

I tried a moving the adapter closer to the PLW1000, re-pairing by pressing the security button on both devices, but ultimately what worked was restoring the devices to factory settings. But it actually took a few tries to restore them to factory settings, because the various skinny objects I was using weren't actually pressing the button.  A ballpoint pen does not work; a thumbtack does.

    Thanks!

    Gabrielle

  • The PLW1000 probably has a bad or no connection to the Powerline adapter at the other end.  You should re-do the process to pair them together.
