Do I actually need both boxes hooked up to the wall and not a surge protector even though the one I have plugged into it is an expensive surge protector?
If you read the manuals and stuff for powerline kit, it specifically says do not use surge protectors.
Do not plug in Powerline products to a power strip, extension cord, or surge protector as this might prevent them from working correctly, or reduce the network performance.
I use power strips but would not contemplate a surge protector. The "surges" it suppresses may well be the ethernet signal you want.
