Adding a powerline adapter to an existing powerline network | Answer | NETGEAR Support
You need to introduce the new plugs to the existing devices. Out of the box they will refuse to talk to one another.

I did re-read the instructions.
For introduction, I did plug in 1st of second pair and give 2 seconds on the security plug on the original (downstream of router) and then within 1 minute press 2 seconds on new plug.
i did same on 2nd of the new pair.
I did find that doing so caused the security light on the 2nd of original pair to go blink red for a while before returning to green.
beyond this and constant paper clip resets trying different outlets closer to routers/1200 plug, can't get any connectivity thruput. Yet all green lights - go figure.

The hdx101 is early generation stuff that seems to predate the AV standard.
Apart from that, I find it hard to understand your description of what is connected to what. For example, I don't get this bit:
I had tried to add a giga switch downstream from one of the newer pl1200 but despite greens on adapter, PC has no connectivity.
What is a giga switch? If you are adding a multi-port LAN switch, try using something else.
When setting up a Powerline network, I test each plug with a laptop's LAN connection. I also do all the connecting with the "host" and "guest" plugs close to each other. I then move the second plug to where I want to use it.
You may have done all this, you don't say, and I can't follow what you have done.
