Powerline 1200 on Surge Protector

I'm trying to find out if it is s good idea to connect the network portion of my Powerline device to a surge protector.
I understand that the three prong electrical plug on the device needs to be installed directly into a wall mounted receptacle, but I have a surge protector that has a "network in", and "network out" module for ethernet cords.
Will the Powerline device work if I run the ethernet cable through it? And if so, is it a good idea?

Netgear advises against using powerline devices in any way that does not involve a direct connection to a mains socket.

My experience suggests that this advice is not necessary. I have put plugs into extension blocks, with and without surge protectors, and all works well.

The performance may depend on the hardware you are using, but I would not be deterred from trying the system you describe. It works for me.
