Powerline 1200 Pick A Plug lights are green. When I plug in ethernet cables they go red. Why?

I have followd the instruction. If I leave the Powerline plugged in without the ethernet cables plugged in it continues to stay green. When I then connect my cat6 cables either end the 'Pick A Plug' LED turns red.

The Powerline1200s are in the same room on the same ringmain on the same fuse box in a 250v single phase house.

I just have purchased quite a few of these units as I intended to use them all over the house. I have tried the same setup with a different pair but I still have the same issue. I am getting a pitifull 3MB/s.

From what the documentation states I understood that the 'Pick A Plug' is indicative of the state of the connection between devices. It does not state that it should reflect quality of service as the data is transceived.

Please help otherwise I will have to get a refund on all of these units. If a different unit would be more suitable please let me know otherwise I will have no choice to get these refunded and go elsewhere.

Thanks for any help

I don't understand the distinction between these two statements.  The documentation states that the color of the 'Pick A Plug' reflects the link speed.  Red signifies a link speed of < 50 Mbps (Megabits per second).  Make sure the adapters are plugged directly into the wall outlet.  Do not plug them into a power strip or extension cord.  You may need to experiment with different outlets to achieve better speeds.

Achieving good performance is entirely dependent on the quality and layout of your electrical mains wiring and the presence of electrical noise that could interfere with the Powerline signal.  Unfortunately, there's very little that the average person can do to change those variables, which makes Powerline very much a hit or miss affair.

  • I had the same issue.  I contacted support and they told me it was normal.  Well, no, it's not normal. because fluctuating speeds like that indicate a problem.  I was able to investigate and detrermined that my speeds were going from over 80 mbps to 0 then back.  Relatively new wiring, tried several outlets, no help.  Had to return.  These devices are very hit an miss.
