These things aren't always the easiest to configure.
Have you been through the steps in the Installation Guide?

Set the two plugs up side by side and then move the "mobile" one – the one not permanently connected to the modem/router – to where you want it.

Okay, so I've tried that and it seems to be working so far! I'll report back if there are any problems but at the moment I think you've solved my dilemma.
