XET1001 want to add wifi access point

XET1001 is now 10 years old. The Home Plug 1.0 standard predates the AV standard for powerline devices. You will have a hard time buying anything compatible. You will have to resort to the second-hand market.
Thanks for the feedback on the XET1001. I bought a Netgear Powerline 500 + Wifi package from Amazon which includes an XWN5001 and XAV5201. Since this setup uses Homeplug AV format, I assumed it would work well with my older XET1001s as mentioned on a Netgear write up. The system is back up and running now with good results. I may even add a new XWN5001 out in the detached garage so I get WiFi out there!
The only issues were that the setup instructions were outdated and didn't match the netgear website. The Netgear Genie app worked fine but didn't match the instructions. And, the WiFi password chosen by me included an ampersand (&) which was not handled properly but the XWN5001 so I had to remove it.

The manual for the XWN5001 specifically states "Not HomePlug v1.0 or HomePlug v1.0 Turbo compatible".
The XET1001 is HomePlug 1.0.

Good idea. But before you do it, use your existing plugs to check that the mains link to the garage is good enough.
You don't need to do any more than move your "remote" plug into the garage and see if it establishes a good connection. (Use a laptop or something portable to test it.) Once set up plugs remember their settings and will work wherever you put them.
The bad news is that you cannot buy a single XWN5001. You will have to buy another pair of plugs. Maybe you could use any left overs for something else. I have one connecting a smart BluRay player.
