Hi RoscoePC,
If you disable the WLAN Autocnofig, your may need to use the Genie version so that the Genie will manage your network settings.

I guess I didn't explain my problem and gave too much information up front and I also notice that some of my wording could be confusing.
So I'll try again, I have Windows 8.1 and I want to use only my NetGear A6100 NIC to handle the wireless in Windows, so can I disable the WLAN service that comes with Windows 8.1 and just use the Genie version of the drivers/firmware I downloaded from netgear.com or do I need both the Windows WLAN service to be turned on plus have the Genie in order to properly use my NetGear NIC?

JamesGL,
thanks for your answer, but you said "may need to use Genie..." which doesn't sound too promising. As a NetGerar forums moderator, I would have thought you would have given a more definite answer.
I can tell already, this is going to turn into some week long ordeal where I never really get an exact and correct answer, so I guess it's my fault for thinking I'd get some use from this forum.
Thanks, I'll just go elsewhere...tired of searching netgear for a simple question to a not so difficult question.

Hi RoscoePC,
The WLAN AutoConfig and NETGEAR Genie are programs that manages the wireless network. They can co-exist but you can always use either of the two. If you do not want to use the WLAN autoconfig, then Genie will manage the wireless network.
