Access point connection is very slow

I am working with a WN604 N150 access point.

This is in a two story building... in which there is only one network cable from the first floor where the router sits.

We bought the WN604 to provide better wireless coverage on the second floor for laptops, and also serve as a switch for a desktop, printer and a NAS unit. We are connecting the WN604 directly to the wall outlet for the one cable mentioned above.

If we connect the desktop directly to the wall network outlet, and go to speedtest.net, we get download speeds in excess of 20mbps... so the cable connecting the two floors appears to be fine.

However, when we take the cable from the wall and put that into ports 1 through 4 (we have tried them all) of the WN604, we only get download speeds of 2-3 mbps. We have swapped cables, and even tried another computer... but any "wired" connection through the WN604 does not get higher than 3 mbps.

For the laptops, the wireless connection to the wn604 is fine... it is only the wired connection that is being limited.

Any ideas and suggestions of where/what to check would be greatly appreciated.

  • I'd say this is quite peculiar - I've never used the WN604, but I would assume it's an access point with an integrated switch and as such I would not expect any significant degradation in throughput on the wired side.

Since you say laptops connected to the WN604 are not affected by the degradation I'm going to assume that the upstream link from the WN604 to the router is good and the problem lies between the WN604 and the PC - you may be able to confirm this by timing a file transfer between the NAS and the PC.

Check in the network configuration on the PC and see if it allows you to change the speed & duplex settings - confirm that you are getting a 100mbps connection and try both full & half duplex and see if it makes a difference.
  • The laptop access via a wireless connection was fine. However, if I connected the laptop via a wire to the WN604, I saw the same slowdown as with the desktop.

Meanwhile, in other parts of the house (wireless connections) were also very good.

I connected to this account recently and based on my other post I noticed that the 2.4Ghz of the WN604 had a different SSID than the 2.4GHz side of the wireless router on the first floor. I changed the SSID of the WN604 to match that of the wireless router. I also change the channel of the router to 11, and the access point to channel 1. So these changes got me where I wanted to be on the wireless side.

I was then going to start working on the wired side issue, and as a starting point went to speedtest.net. It now reported 24mbps... on the wired side which was where we wanted to be.

I am not sure how/if the changes on the wireless side affected anything (I would think that they should not) or if something happened in my absence.

In any case, we are getting the speeds we wanted... just not sure how we got there. In any case, thanks for the recommendations.

Issue solved... just do not know why. Just posting what we saw in case someone else has a similar issue.
