Today I repreated the process that I described below one last time.  It turns out my definition of "forever" was wrong.

I didn't actually do anything different, except this time I set my phone down on my desk and worked on other things for several minutes.  I would look at the brower window on my phone every minute or two and see that the URL was different that last time I'd looked.  Still with that "just a moment message", but now I realized that there was actually an active session in progress.

I began to hope that this was just the lowest website I'd seen since the Netscape days.  And sure enough, in about 5-6 minutes I got to a "success" screen which showed the two bands as functioning and also noting that they were in fact still open.  When I clicked on "continue" there was another delay and then after a wile I got to a registration sceen.  After registering, then the web app walked me thru a couple easy setup screens to assgin WP2 and passwords to both bands.

I looked at my list of access points and the orignal open IDs were gone and there were two password protected IDs employing my source router name plus

Eureka! the extender now works as promised.
