How do you upload firmware to an extender if you can’t get it to connect to your wifi?

EX6150-100nas

using apple computers.  I don’t know what the router is; it’s my parents’.  We tried adding an extender with the Nighthawk app and it was a flipping disaster. Two of us tried; it just took us in circles and wouldn’t connect.  I then tried the WPA button (WHY doesn’t Netgear say to use this??), but I’m not sure it’s connected to the system. There’s no second network listed in local networks, and the signal is no better.

    They certainly told you. 8-)

A good start would be having an eye on the fine NETGEAR AC1200 WiF Range Extender Model EX6150 User Manual. In the Get Started section, starting from p.9 ff. Not far away, in the Install the WiFi Extender section, ...

    Install the WiFi Extender

    ....

Place the Extender and Apply Power
    ...

Connect to an Existing WiFi Network
    ...

    Connect with WPS

Consult the extender Status Screen Display. This adventure does begin on Log In to the Extender After Installation:

To answer the initial subject question; The Firmware Update process is on p.42 ff.

There was no manual in the box, only a quick start guide. It did not tell us to use the WPS button, only the Nighthawk app. After an hour with customer support,we could not get them working so returned.  Unusual for Netgear hardware.

This is about the standard for many years. However, the information ref, the User Manual is there - just the complete QSG of the v1 hardware is much to long, so it's hard to find.

I'm a little bit disappointed the Helpdesk (paid work, by Netgear) was not able to assist you further. Almost everything I could think about required is in the fine UM.
