Laptop->wifi->WN3000RP fails but Laptop->wifi->router->wifi->WN3000RP works

I'm one of the people having trouble setting up a WN3000RP. My problem seems subtly different to the others.
I have a router (Huawei HG556a, supplied by my network provider) and that seems to be working fine. I can connect to it over wifi from my laptop etc. The WN3000RP is to extend the router's wifi range, of course. So I ran through the WN3000RP wizard setup using option #2 (ie without WPS) connecting to the WN3000RP via wifi. Seemed okay.
But the step to reconnect at the end failed to work, ie I cannot connect to WN3000RP via wifi. I can connect to the router, and from the router I can get to the WN3000RP.
So Laptop->wifi->router->wifi->WN3000RP works
But Laptop->wifi->WN3000RP does not.
By 'not working' I mean the wifi symbol keeps turning and never comes back connected. When I tried with my phone it said it was waiting for an IP address, which makes me think it is a DHCP thing. I have WPA2 security setup on both the router and WN3000RP and both prompt me for my password and then move on, but the WN3000RP doesn't go any further. My guess is it verified the password okay and then tried to get an IP address from the router and couldn't.

More details:
router says it can see the WN3000RP and has assigned it an IP address.
WN3000RP is about two feet from the router and four feet from my laptop.
I had to add the WN3000RP MAC address to the router before it would connect, but once done the router seemed happy with it.
There is currently no internet connection, which should not matter, I think.
Maintenance/Status page from the WN3000RP (obtained by Laptop->wifi->router->wifi->WN3000RP) looks like this:

Hardware Version WN3000RPv1h2
Firmware Version V1.0.1.36_1.1.47
GUI Language Version V1.0.1.36_2.1.9.5

Connection Status to Existing Network
Name (SSID) vodafone6E02
Link Rate 270 Mbps
Connection Status Connected <<<<< yay? so it sees the router but won't connect anyone else.

Extender IP Info
MAC Address 04:A1:51:E3:23:AA
IP Address 192.168.1.3 <<<< I assume the router assigned this
DHCP Client ON
IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 <<<< router reports using the same mask
Gateway IP Address 192.168.1.1 <<< router reports this as its own address
Domain Name Server 192.168.1.1
192.168.1.1

Extender Wireless Setting
Name (SSID) vodafone6E02_EXT
Region Australia
Channel 7(P)+3(S)
Wireless mode: Up to 300Mbps
Wireless AP On
Broadcast Name On
Wi-Fi Protected Setup Configured

In the Advanced/Wireless Settings I have 'Turn Access Control On' unchecked and no devices in the list.
Setup/IP Address Setup has 'Get Dynamically IP Address From Router' selected.
Setup/Wireless Settings has WPA2-PSK [AES], same as my router.

Thanks for any help
Roger

    try lowering mode to 150, also placing them within feet of each other is asking for troulble.

    Thanks for the reply.

    I can't find an option to change the mode. I assume it ought to be under 'Wireless Settings' and there are two on my interface: under 'Maintenance' and under 'Advanced'. neither of these show an option to change the mode.

    The WN3000RP and the router are only next to each other so I can try things out while solving the problem. I moved the WN3000RP upstairs for a while yesterday, close to where I plan to keep it permanently, but it made no difference to the problem, it just meant I had to go up and down the stairs more.:(

    So I'll give the mode change a go, but I'll need advice on where to change it, and once I've changed it I'll try moving the WN3000RP back upstairs.
    Thanks again.
  • I should add one more thing.
    If I power down the router the WN3000RP will respond to a wifi connect request. My theory is that it knows it can't get to its configured DHCP server (the router) so it uses its own (ie the one it uses during initial config).
    But there might be something more interesting going on.

    Mode setting is in router WIFI setup, use lower setting 144 max, single channel. I just found that it should work up to 300. I would try lowering it anyway. Contact support if still having a problem
  • Okay it is working now. I found a reference here to the same router+WN3000RP setup but a different problem. They mentioned they had disabled the MAC address on the router, an option I'd looked for but not found. A bit more searching and I found there is a way if you log in as a different user (advanced/advanced) and I turned it off.
    After that it just worked.
    So I'm all sorted.:)
