Netgear N300 connection timeout

I've had this for a while now it's been really good but recently while trying to play games online on the PS4 the connection is good but in game the ping is 15-25 but it rises to 200-400 then lowers then rises again it's never happened before I've moved it around reset it but it still happens.

Then the next troubleshooting step is to sort out whether this is internet congestion or an issue with the WiFi/extender throughput.  The steps above should help sort this out.

Another option is to upgrade to a higher-performing extender.  That won't help if the issue isn't with the WiFi/Extender throughput.

Is the connection actually timing out, or are you just seeing a rise in ping times?

A rise in ping time has two basic causes:

    • the ping packet is getting dropped by the extender or the router WiFi, and needs to be re-sent.
    • there is congestion on the network path (not necessarily wifi).

The next time it rises, maybe try pinging from a machine that is connected by ethernet to the router.  There is a tool called pingplotter that could be useful (it is quite expensive, but you could just use it during the trial period).
