WN2000RPTv2

I just joined this forum after buying a WN2000RPTv2 access point. This is a super easy access point to install and it works fairly well to extend a network. The only question i have is, why do i have to log off of the network router SSID and onto the AP SSID when moving from room to room. When i renamed the AP to the same SSID as my router, it didn't seem to have any effect on my signal strength. Is there a reason the AP has to have a different SSID from the Router. Is the wireless client supposed to jump from Router to AP depending on the best signal strength?

  • SAME SSID = Roaming

DIFFERENT SSID = Hoping to SSID

you are planning to WALK AROUND=ROAMING within the multiple AP then use same.

What real makes the wifi adapter to change SSID regardless of same/different SSID is based on "roaming agrressiveness " on adapter and NOT AP.

google "roaming aggressiveness ", you may not able to tweak on smartphone but some of wifi pc can
  • Thanks for the quick feedback.
I ran some tests. I think my roaming laptop doesn't jump from router to access point when they have the same SSID because the roaming laptop is still locked onto the router when I move into AP territory.

Interestingly enough, when the AP is named differently I can manually switch from the router to the AP network ('hoping') without my laptop missing a beat during various tests such as streaming video tests.
It kind of acts as if it never actually disconnects from one SSID to the other.
