Thanks for all the help. I tried Netgear Tech Support on two separate occasions and all the support people want to do is sell you a six month $59 service contract to resolve the problem with the Kindle Fire, Netgear Extender and the SMC router. They've got an even better deal - $79 for a whole year! Rather than become a WiFi/Rrouter protocall expert I returned the Extender and will live with the WiFi reception from the SMC router! Not a good experience with Netgear.
