WN802Tv2 stops talking to laptop and needs reboot

I've recently purchased a Netgear WN802Tv2 Access Point. I find that it needs to be rebooted several times a day to restore connectivity with an already connected laptop.

To explain, connectivity is perfect for many hours then suddenly the WN802T drops connection to the laptop. At this point other wireless devices can still connect but the WN802T stubbornly refuses to connect to the original laptop which has been working ok for hours.

Rebooting the laptop has no effect (and I've seen the problem happen with two different Windows 7 laptops, not at the same time).

Rebooting the WN802Tv2 fixes the problem every time! (The laptop immediately reconnects automatically.)

The problem has occurred with the WN802Tv2 firmware "out of the box" and I've since upgraded the firmware to WN802Tv2_V3.1.1, and done a factory reset, then re-entered my configuration settings, however the problem continues!

Does anyone else have this problem?

Netgear folks, do I have a faulty WN802Tv2 unit?

Regarding my particular configuration, I need to run WEP 128-bit shared key, as several of my client devices don't support WPA. My network is 10.*.*.* with the WN802Tv2 at 10.1.2.2 and the clients at 10.1.1.* (DHCP from separate ADSL router).

  • Further information ...

In the problem scenario, I used identical names for:
    - WN802Tv2 "Access Point Name" (i.e. hostname),
    - WN802Tv2 "Wireless Network Name (SSID), and
    - Windows "workgroup" name for the wireless client laptops

It appears that the "Access Point Name" conflicts with the "workgroup" name causing a Windows error "Duplicate Name on the Network" when client PCs boot. I've now altered the "Access Point Name" and I'm waiting to see if this has fixed the original problem, i.e. "WN802Tv2 stops talking to laptop and needs reboot".

I now wonder if the SSID needs to be changed as well!
  • The following suggestions (from other threads) do NOT help prevent the random disconnection of Windows 7 laptops, and the subsequent need to reboot the WN802Tv2 access point:

    1. Make access point hostname different to LAN workgroup name (however this did eliminate the "Duplicate Name on the Network" being reported by Windows)

    2. Factory reset the WN802Tv2

    3. Change channel width to "20 MHz" (fixed)

So, unfortunately ... the WN802Tv2 reboots continue daily ...
  • It's not a DCHP issue is it? Have you tried correlating the time of the failure with the DHCP lease time?

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try correlating the lease renewal time with the failure, though I've previously tried adjusting my DHCP server (which is on the ADSL 2+ modem) to non-expiring leases and it did not seem to help.

I've noticed lots of Windows 7 wireless disconnection issues across many other forums, so perhaps the issue isn't the Netgear access point, but the reboot of the access point somehow helps the situation.
  • 1. An upgrade of the Windows 7 Atheros wireless driver has fixed my problem (but for that laptop only). The laptop no longer loses connectivity so I no longer need to reboot the Netgear WN802Tv2 access point.

    2. However other visitors' laptops that have an Atheros wireless driver still lose connectivity (requiring reboot of the WN802Tv2).

    3. There's a lot of Atheros wireless devices out there. I wonder if Netgear can provide a patch or upgrade to the WN802Tv2 software/firmware to make it compatible with the Atheros wireless clients. It seems the older Atheros driver does something that causes the WN802Tv2 to ignore that laptop even after the laptop reboots.

If anyone is interested in the Atheros wireless upgrade (which fixed my problem), the upgrade is for the following devices:

    Atheros AR2427, AR5002G, AR5002X, AR5004G, AR5004X, AR5005G, AR5005GS, AR5006, AR5006EG, AR5006EGS, AR5006EX, AR5006EXS, AR5006G, AR5006GS, AR5006X, AR5006XS, AR5007, AR5007EG, AR5007G, AR5008, AR5008WB-EG, AR5008X, AR5009, AR5B91, AR5B92, AR5B93, AR5B95, AR5B97, AR9002WB, AR9002WB-1NG, AR9002WB-2NG, AR9227, AR922X, AR9280, AR9281, AR9283, AR9285, AR9287, AR928X, AR938X, AR9485, AR9485WB-EG, Osprey

and the upgrade is available here:

Unfortunately the above quote has now proven to be incorrect!

The WN802Tv2 still drops the connection with the updated Atheros driver for Windows 7, though the connection drops are possibly less often than they were.

I've submitted a problem report to Netgear Support and they are looking to see if they can produce a firmware upgrade to the WN802Tv2 to avoid this problem. I'll put a final post here when Netgear Support conclude the problem report.
  • After struggling with this for hours on end, I remembered that I had previously unchecked Enable WMM (Wi-Fi multimedia) settings (2.4GHz b/g/n)
in my 3700 V1 .98DNS_NA router. I re-enabled it and I now have full internet on my netbook Win 7 Starter with the AR5B95 adapter.
