Just to finish off this 'experience': to reset the extender and thereby open up access to settings, you must keep the extender reset 'button' down for over 20/25 seconds - 10 absolutely won't do it and this was where much of my frustration with this situation came from, so hold it down for 20-30 seconds! But having successfully re-set the extender and got it back on line with full internet access, every couple of days, I get messages such as 'only limited access to the internet' and the original problem comes back - the extender is shown on devices as connected to the internet but no access. Streaming netflixs or any other services come to a halt - TV screen comes up (Google Chrome dongle) with a message advising no connection to the extender. So I turn off the power, wait for half a minute and turn it back on, extender re-boots and connections restored and access to the internet once again. So the problem seems to be that the extender electronics are unstable. The extender is well within range of the router, strong signal, so it's not that. If this is a problem being experienced by many, its a design fault, if it's just me, well there may be a dry solder joint somewhere. Either way, it's a dam' nuisance and I'm going to have to find a solution which, I guess, is buy somebody else's range extender or go for a powerline solution for the TV at least.
