Cannot do firmware update - R6120
Ever since our purchase of this device, we have never been able to log into the router. We have contacted you on 2 previous occasions mentioning this, but - as the problem at the time mainly related to the Wi-Fi - we were satisfied with sorting out what the default password for that was. Now we know there is indeed a firmare update for it out but it cannot be done unless we log in. Have tried using the reset button on the back of the router and every combination of default login info possible (all lower-case, all upper-case, capitolized, etc.); nothing has worked. About to go buy a Lynksys again...
Excellent news. Worth knowing that reset can take several attempts before it stocks.

So, password's now been re-set, secret questions re-set and notes taken on all the above.
I just turn off password recovery. My passwords and stuff aren't obvious, certainly not Netgear's defaults, and Smersh isn't likely to attack me.

How are you trying to get at the router? Wired link from a PC? (The best option.) Using a browser or the desktop genie? Wifi from a mobile device? Mobile genie app?
What happens when you try to login with whichever device you are using?

"Nothing has worked" could mean many things. What happens when you try? (See above.)
Remember the wifi password is not the same as the router access password.
Finally, what modem sits in front of this router? That can be one reason why you cannot access the thing.

Usually thru a wired link from connected PC running Win 10 Pro, latest version. Have tried both browser and Netgear Genie. Just installed the Genie on my laptop that connects via WiFi, still no luck with logging. In an attempt to log in by browser, I get as far as it asking me to reply to secret questions. No clue as to what those are supposed to be either.

see above.... If connecting by browser on either PC it will eventually take me to what I think is a password recovery or reset screen. Don't know answers to questions asked. (Asks for name of 1st school & mother's middle name) Have tried using info from both myself and my husband, but, again cannot get in.

Quite aware of this.

Whatever one that's been provided by our cable company here in Erie County OH (Buckeye Cablevision). It not only does the Internet but does our home phone. This one is at least a year old (older than router) and we have wondered if it needs replacing too.

What possible effect could it have?

I'd stick with a web browser. (Less unreliable Netgear software that
way.)
The usual remedy for a lost password is a settings reset (and manual
reconfiguration). Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model
number, and look for Documentation. Get the User Manual. Look for
"Factory Settings".
