N300 Wireless Gigabit Router Slowing Internet
Hello - I get 100 MBPS Download / 5 MBPS upload through my modem (about 10 YO Arris Surfboad SB6121) -- hardwired from that to a PC I receive close to 125 down / 5.5 up
When I connected a used Netgear RangeMax WNR3500 router to the router after performing a factory reset -- my peripherals were registering the same speed. A few days later the speedtest takes over 300ms to ping versus the usual 15ms and the resulting download speed is variable -- anywhere from 4 to 45, but upload speed is consistently less than 2.
I checked if any firmware updates were required for the router and none seem to exist -- I tried unplugging/replugging the router without much success, as was the case when turning off both the modem and the router.
I'm curious what may be causing this speed minimization and what options there might be to help diagnose / fix it. I should also note the router itself is about 5 years old -- but again, worked fine when originally connected.

the router might be 5 years for you but that device was manufactured 13 years ago. i was released in 2008.
You might try reinstalling the firmware to it in case the version its on was corrupt. A reset only clears out settings.
thats something you can try.
but it might be time to look at an upgrade for that router. Its quite far behind on technology

I appreciate the reply and that's great perspective. That seems ancient. I will look for a new combo unit to replace this --- speed is too irregular -- I just tried another test and it got up to 46 down / 2 up on one machine, 12/1 on another, and 30/2 on a third. So ... yeah irregular. Thanks again.

Also to note, sometimes the power adapters go bad causing the router to lose wifi and connection to the modem. I have had routers have those symptoms before and when I tried a different power adapter my problems dissapeared
