Orbi RBR20 slow in spite of Cox Gigablast

I have an Orbi RBR20 with an RBW30 satellite. I have Cox Gigablast. When I run the speedtest in Orbi (by going to Advanced...Setup...Speedtest) I get 760MBPS. But when I run the it on my browser on the same laptop at the same location, I get less than 100 MBPS and many times 30 MBPS. When I run speedtest app on my Android phone near the router (which is close to the modem), I get 300 MBPS. But when I move to my room about 30 feet away, I get 30 MBPS. I have the satellite downstairs but the WiFi and the room I am testing is upstairs and is open, except for the one wall and door of my room.

Looks like Orbi is getting the bandwidth. So Cox is saying it is not their problem. And my Orbi support period has ended. I have around 20 devices connected to Orbi like TVs, Laptops, streaming devices, etc. but that is fairly typical for any home. We don't have cable/satellite TV and watch only streaming videos/tv like YouTube TV, Prime, Netflix, Hulu, etc. and at any time 2 out of our 5 TVs are on.

Would appreciate any help.

Thanks

  • A couple things.

    1. When you run speedtest off the orbi app, it hosts the speedtest on the router. Its going to give you the best result because its hardwired.

    2. wireless speeds is variable. Especially with orbi. It does bandsteering. Which can switch you from 2.4ghz to 5ghz based of distance/wireless signal. 2.4ghz broadcasts futher and through more materials  but is much much slower than 5ghz. so you need to confirm which band your on when speedtesting as well as distance. speeds will drop off quickly with 5ghz.

    3. Devices are important as well. You weren't specific with what you're devices are or the wireless chip in them. these are key as a 1x1 antenna device is going to be half the speed of a 2x2. As well as a wireless n device will be slower than ac.

    Wired or wireless?

As well as plemans advice, some older laptops have wired Ethernet LAN that is stuck at 100 Mbps.

Then there are whatever drivers you may have on the laptop. It is all too easy to wind up with out of date drivers. Windows Update won't find updates for drivers.
