Problems with router or internet?

I started having random connection problems. My internet has gone down maybe 4-5 times this week alone. This is very rare normally. I have Spectrum and have never had issues, mostly. I pay for 100mbps internet because I’m a gamer, PS5, Xbox, PC, switch. I have two smart TVs, Alexa’s, my iPhone and a tablet and my girlfriend will bring her stuff over occasionally too. I figure this is well enough as most of the stuff isn’t being used at once. I’m starting to think it’s my Netgear Nighthawk R6700v3. How do I tell if it’s faulty? It’s only a little over a year old but every time I try to check for firmware updates on the app it just says “there was a problem checking for firmware”. Does this affect my internet if I don’t update firmware? It was suppose to be easy. I just have no idea if it’s a spectrum thing or my router.

    What connection problems? Wifi? Wired?

    What symptoms do you see?

What do the LEDs on the R6700v3 look like when this happens? Especially the Internet LED.

Do you have a modem in front of the router. If so, which one? And what does that do when the problems occur?

How are you checking the firmware? There are various options.

    Visit the support pages:

    Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.

Check the section in the manual on updating the firmware.

You may have done that already. I can't tell from your message.

I mention it because Netgear gave up on supplying paper manuals and CD versions some years ago and people sometimes miss the downloads.

  • michaelkenward is correct. Details are key in helping out.

Also the setup you have like:

    modem/gateway:

    Firmware on router:

    error you're getting:

Is IPv6 enabled? (newer firmwares have had some DNS issues. some were fixed with enabling IPv6, others had to downgrade)

I would avoid any firmware version higher than 1.0.4.106 at least to start.  This one seems to be the most stable.  Versions 1.0.4.118 & 1.0.4.120 have numerous reports of DNS issues and 1.0.4.122 has a couple of reports about being unable to connect to the router configuration from a PC (attempts to connect using ip 192.168.1.1 or routerlogin.net fail).  The Nighthawk app still works.  If you aren't already running 1.0.4.106 and want to upgrade or downgrade to it you will need to download it and then do a manual install.

FWIW, I have an R6400v2 AC1750 Smart WiFi router running firmware 1.0.4.106 with Spectrum 50 mps.  It is pretty stable.  I have tried firmware versions 1.0.4.118 & 1.0.4.120 and encountered DNS issues with both.
