R6400 newby optimize wireless speeds any setting config needed?
Hi, newby here wanted to learn how can I really push the wireless speed. I have just bought the R6400, I have a qualcomm atheros ar956x wireless network adapter, and time warner 300MB speed. Wired I am getting the 300+ speed, I know you get slower speeds wireless, but I am only getting 120MB. I was wondering if I can get up 200+MB with my wireless card? How can I maximize my speed, I use wireless all the time I am handicap so wireless is everything for me, and I want to learn if you guys can help me. I have been using google and youtube for some answers and always not the answers I need. Please let me know of any help or I need a new wireless card, or some kind of settings I can change on my laptop or router. Oh yea I have looked on this site all the answers I could changing channels 1,6,11 and turn off qos, and turn on wmm did all of those things. One more question, with my wireless card can it shows 5g wireless options in the settings? Thanks for any help and sorry for dumb questions that I will ask in the future.

Devices (laptops) that have this adapter are specified to only connect to 802.11n which means that the adapter is not dual band. You may want to check for wireless interference using a WiFi analytics app/program.

Thanks for helping tried a program called inssider home and I am trying to find how to use it. I did not know about the adapter thank you so much, I need to find where to get a better connection in my house though, I will be looking in more about where the trouble is.

You may also try using the WiFi analytics feature of the NETGEAR Genie app/program to help you identify the best channel, check for interference, and location to place the router and/or your device/s. You can download the latest version of the app/program using the link below on your preferred platform.

One thing I am not clear on is if your are trying to boost the speed within your network or if you are looking to improve/increase your internet speed. These will be two totally seperate things.
A. Your internet speed is limited by your ISP. As of now, most standard ISP service (residential) is maxed out at 100, and this is only if you have fibreoptic right to the wall of your residence. This is something to take up with your ISP. If you are not seeing the rate that your ISP says it is delivering, then there is something else going on either with the ISP or there are clashings of firewalls of your router and your computer system and ISP.
B. As for your wireless network, within your home network, aka your router. You should have no problem hitting raw high speeds with the R6400 so long as your end devices support it.
On my R6400, I have the 2.4 ghz setup for "auto" channel and mode "up to 450". the 5.0 ghz is setup for a high channel that has another above and below it, because it will use adjacent channels to split and parallel. example use 153 or 157, the mode is set to "up to 1300".
You should have no problems hitting 65-150 mps on your iphones, 130-150 on xboxes, 150-270 on computers, etc. Again, so long as your end device has the adapter wifi technology to do those rates. If you are not seeing these connection speeds, then I suggest your end device adapter is not up to the task. Because the R6400 certainly is capable.
Finally, if you are seeing the raw connection speeds (netgenie) but your are not achieving the throughput speeds in reality - that again points to potential clashings of adapter settings, firewalls, etc.

Hi thanks for your helpful reply, so first I am trying to boost my speed because I am paying for 300Mbps and I am only getting 100Mbps, but when I plug my laptop wired I get thos 300+ speeds that I want, but not getting close to half the speed with wireless.
Second I have a qualcomm atheros 956x wireless card built in my laptop this laptop is fairly new 8 months old too so it should be able to push those speeds, and with this card it cant find the 5g only 2.4 so im ok with that.
Third I think it is my settings, or firewall I do not know how to turn off the firewall of the router? So I think its settings I must be doing something wrong with it. Tried changing channels and stuff and found out ch.6 is the best at 120Mbps.

I have timed outs what does that mean and how can I fix it? Thank thank thank you for all your guys help, and time in trying to teach me how to fix this problems or a great learning experience.
Another thing to consider, which trips up alot of folks is the difference between megaBITs per second (Mbps) and megaBYTEs per second (MBps). The difference being a factor of 8. 8 bits to a byte.
So .... 450 Mbps connection speed is really only a 56 Megabyte speed.
Just pointing that out as people frequently get tripped up between the two and mix the units, ...
