Registration is required

It appears that registration is required in order to configure the router (to change the SSID, for example).

Physical access to the device is required to change the SSID.  Registration is not.

Perform a Factory Reset on the device and configure it.  One step in the process is to change the WiFi SSID/password (if desired)

Here is my experience.  After a Factory Reset, I connected (via an Ethernet cable to a LAN port) to a Netgear R6400 (pre-owned, purchased from eBay) using a browser directed to 192.168.1.1.  I encountered a screen requiring me to register.  My attempt to register failed, because the router had been registered by a previous owner.

My experience with Netgear routers has been that every time I perform a configuration, the "Register this device" screen pops up and I simply ignore it and go on to the next screen.

It might be useful to examine that screen carefully.
