Security key is correct but saying it isn't

Question

internet was working fine and went to change the security encry and put the wrong security key went logged into the router got the right one put it in and it's saying "The network security key isn't correct. please try again.

after a hour i had regenerated the passphrase a couple times and it now works. still not 100% sure what had happened.
